What is a Quality Diamond?

A diamond’s value is determined primarily by its cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

Understanding cut:
Cut is the result of a craftsman’s skill in transforming a rough diamond into a breathtaking gem. A diamond has facets that allow light to enter it, become refracted, and exit in a rainbow of colors. So it follows that a better cut diamond does a better job of dazzling us with its beauty.

Understanding color:
Acting as a prism, a diamond can divide light into a spectrum of colors and reflect this light as colorful flashes called fire. Just as when looking through colored glass, color in a diamond will act as a filter, and will diminish the spectrum of color emitted. The less color in a diamond, the more colorful the fire, and the better the color grade.

Understanding clarity:
Diamonds that are completely clear are the most sought-after and therefore the most expensive. But many diamonds have scratches, marks or other characteristics called inclusions that can detract from its beauty.

Clarity refers to the number, position and size of the inclusions that occur naturally inside diamonds. The fewer and less obvious the inclusions, the more valuable the diamond.

Carat weight:
This pertains to both the size and the weight of the diamond. For example, not all one-carat diamonds have the same measurements due to the cut of the stone. Therefore, when purchasing a diamond consider the measurements of the stone as compared to the carat weight.

For your protection, consider buying only diamonds that are certified. I prefer GIA certified diamonds.
